This is such a powerful book - a graphic novel done as a scrapbook, and dealing with history and family and what makes us who we are. Though in this case, the history deals with Nazi Germany, the family deals the impact of that war, and the how all of that ties together is the understanding of what made the author who she is today. It's such a well-done story - complete with photos and recollections, and history - bits I'd never heard of and some that I had.

It's a hard thing for all of us, to reckon with the past - particularly when the adults in the room have tried to avoid it. But Krug shows how it's done, and if you shed a tear in the process of the reading? You'll be in good company.
