Resistance to antimicrobial drugs has increased since the first years of their clinical use. Assessments indicate that up to 50% of hospital antibiotic use is inappropriate. It has been demonstrated that interventions to improve appropriate antibiotic prescribing can be successful and can improve the quality of patient care. Stewardship programs are becoming increasingly common as a prevention strategy against this growing problem. Increased governmental regulation and requirements for stewardship activities are drawing interest in this area as well.

As a result, people will be searching for this type of information in order to implement these strategies. This book will seperately describe all components of antibiotic stewardship (objectives, strategies, the evidence base that supports them and measurements), and will be an essential guide to improve antibiotic care in the environment of increasing antibiotic resistance.
