We feel like we think for ourselves. But there's no way to know the countless influences and interactions that have molded us. A step to independent thinking is to figure out who you are and what you value. Think for Yourself: Question Authority explores how our opinions and values need periodic evaluation. Independent thinkers evolve and need to shed the shackles of old views and opinions. When encountering an argument to a long-held opinion or a wild idea, we use critical thinking to evaluate it, as we were taught to do in school. The problem is that critical thinking is critical, but thinking for yourself requires open-mindedness. Open-mindedness is being receptive, and, when the issue is important, it calls for actively searching for evidence to support your beliefs. We have freedom of speech but increasingly we're afraid to speak. Our lives have become subjected to a constant threat of offending someone. If we have a different view, we keep it to ourselves. But sometimes we must question authority.
