This is the story of the courageous airmen who fought gallantly for their empire in the first air war. Although frequently outnumbered, they fought on with remarkable success until the end. Biographical sketches, illustrated by 240 rare photographs of the aces and their aircraft, are given for all 49 aces. Appendices give full details of the victory claims for each ace, a summary of victories by aircrew role, aircraft flown, and maps of the Italian Front. Sixteen pages of colour plates depict 50 aces' aircraft in profile; 16 of these aircraft are shown in top view.
