There is no piece of country in Britain that has been more fought over or contains more physical evidence of past conflicts than the quiet border country between England and Scotland. Walking battlefield sites is a pleasurable experience especially when combined with the tranquil surroundings of attractive countryside that is Northumbria and the borders of Scotland. Historian, experienced walker and author, Brian Conduit, has produced a collection of 22 walks describing 22 military engagements covering all the main battlefield sites in the area. Some have features of interest nearby - perhaps a ruined castle, old church, abbey or Roman site - to add to the interest and enjoyment of the walk. The walks are supplemented by routes featuring other military events in the area. These include the first recorded Viking raid on these shores, on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in 793; two of the many sieges of the two greatest border strongholds, Carlisle and Berwick-on-Tweed; the fate of abbeys on both sides of the border to be caught up in the incessant warfare; and in more recent times, a surprise attack by the German navy on the east coast of England at the start of World War I.
Above all no guide to battlefield and other military walks in this part of the country can omit the grandest military monument in the whole of Britain, Hadrian's Wall. Each walk contains a detailed route description, historical summary, practical information, possible follow-up visits, sketch maps and photographs. Brian Conduit, although born and brought up in the Midlands, has travelled and walked extensively throughout Northumbria and the Scottish Borders. This is his second "Battlefield Walks" book for Sigma Leisure - there are companion publications for the Midlands and Yorkshire.
