Although economic reforms in Central and East European countries have followed differing paths, a number of common themes between them including economic decline, mounting social tension and political strife can also be identified. The author identifies the differences and similarities between Central and East European economies and offers a comparative analysis of the various approaches to economic stabilization and liberalization, as well as exploring the dilemmas of privatization. Because of the complexity of the issues involved in economic transformation, the author argues that the mainstream approach which advocates speed as the most important factor of change is misleading.
