"History and Citizenship" is a practical guide to teaching citizenship in the context of history at Key Stages 3 and 4. This text provides a range of innovative and carefully constructed historical activities based on eight citizenship themes. Each theme is tackled through two, carefully contextualized historical case studies. Sixteen historical case studies cover the full range of the Key Stage 3 History programme of study - some also drawing on content common to GCSE Modern World History specifications. There are also activities which have been structured to allow both good history and good citizenship teaching and to allow for the needs of different classrooms. The introductory material in Part 1 and the reflection on good practice incorporated throughout the activities in Part 2 builds teachers' understanding and raises their expectations of both their own pupils and their own performance. Part 3 offers history departments strategies for ensuring history's continued place in the wider curriculum.
The "History in Practice" series is a joint venture from John Murray and the Historical Association - offering practical teacher's books that aim to support dynamic learning and effective teaching in history.
