Denis Hugh Montgomery joined the British Royal Flying Corps as a trainee pilot in early 1917. He received training as a night-flying pilot before being transferred to 101 Squadron in France. By the time Denis Montgomery reached the squadron, it was based at Clairmarais, and carrying out night bombing raids on German tactical targets in the vicinity of St. Quentin. Apart from periods of leave and illness, Montgomery served as a night bomber pilot with 101 Squadron in France, from October 1917 until the summer of 1918, when he was returned to Home Establishment. He remained in the Royal Air Force until discharged to the Unemployed List in May 1919, following the Armistice. His autobiography, "Down The Flare Path", which details some of his experiences as a night bomber pilot, was originally published in the late 1930s. This is the first reprint of this classic World War One autobiography.
