Thomas Francis Meagher was a revolutionary in Ireland in 1848. He was arrested, condemned to death, exiled to Tasmania and escaped to New York where he raised the Irish Brigade for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Meagher led the Irish Brigade during the Peninsular Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where the Irish Brigade was decimated. Meagher became Territorial Governor of Montana. Meagher inspired the Fenian Brotherhood who eventually secured an independent Ireland.
