Private, or independent, generation has developed to provide electricity for remote houses, on islands, isolated communities, ships and offshore platforms. Such "small systems" are also used in industrial plants needing continuity of supply under their own control, economic savings (perhaps through waste heat recovery) or simply an alternative to local authority supply. Each of these systems presents significant design problems. The purpose of the book is to aid engineers to design, install, operate and maintain small systems.
