Eric the Oracle on Bullying Have you ever felt frightened or unhappy because you're being 'picked on?' Worse than anything, it's often a secret and, for loads of different reasons known only to you, you daren't tell anyone. There are hundreds of reasons for bullying. These can include being black, white, fat, thin, quiet, clever, red-haired, curly haired, where you live, how you talk - or even for just being there! Sometimes bullying happens for no reason at all, other than because the bully feels like doing it. Well, do you know what? If you're being bullied, you don't have to put up with it!
In this tale, Eric the Oracle has a chat with Hamish, who's a young hedgehog standing by himself, away from his friends and family who are all having fun together in the warm sunshine. He looks so unhappy. A willow warbler flying high above the woodland is shocked to see a beautiful looking fox quietly go up to Hamish and cruelly squash some berries into his back leg and try to trip him up to make him look clumsy in front of everyone. No-one else sees this - except the warbler who swoops down to tell Eric. Then be just be mindful that you don't make any careless decisions!
In this teaching tale on saying 'no' to strangers, Eric the Oracle speaks great words of wisdom to a young rabbit called Lapinenzo, who's absorbed in his fascination about the river and wants to see where it flows to - especially as he can't swim. A beautiful swan appears from nowhere and offers him a water ride upstream. And he's carrying chocolates too! But the lovely swan is a stranger to Blockley Bank and Lapinenzo, who has strayed from his family - who've not yet noticed he's gone - hasn't thought carefully about what he's doing. He's just determined to go for a ride on the river. But - - Eric intervenes, just in time! You can learn from Eric the Oracle to be mindful of your safety and say 'no' to favours from strangers. Just use your head: think, ask someone and be safe. But if you feel you're in danger: yell and tell! So, before you do anything, remember to check out what's happening with your parent(s), carer or whoever looks after you. They need to know where you are and who you're with.
It's not being overly suspicious about strangers or unnecessarily unfriendly; it's just about checking in with those you're close to and being sensible, caring and respectful of each other in order to stay safe.
