This third volume of collected plays by John Osborne includes "A Patriot for Me", "A Sense of Detachment", "The End of Me Old Cigar", "Watch it Come Down" and "West of Suez". "A Patriot for Me" made theatre history when it was banned by the Lord Chamberlain's officer for obscenity and was promptly staged by the Royal Court Theatre in 1965, obliged to register as a private club for the purpose. It tells the story of a young and ambitious officer in the Austro-Hungarian army who was blackmailed through his homosexuality into becoming a spy for Tsarist Russia. Like Jimmy Porter, Archie Rice and Luther, Osborne created a character whose powerful self-determination lead to an inevitable fate.
