Along came artist/musician (and long-time friend) Karan Raitt with an idea for collaborating in an art/poetry/music project in the NEOS (North East Open Studios) week. As we blethered, we came to the conclusion that poems on different aspects of love might be the most interesting for us to tackle. These are selected from poems I wrote between 2005 and 2011. Although we intended presenting our own different images for the "show", I wanted to make something for people to take away if they perhaps didn't have space for a picture, or couldn't afford to purchase a work of art. This is how "Lovelorn" came about. The publisher advised me that my volume of love poems might be too slim to publish in the way I wanted, and they wondered whether I might want to include some illustrations! I have always been very interested in art, so this possibility really added a new dimension to the project. I decided to look for linocut/woodcut images which I have always loved. Researching and selecting the pictures was exciting, and also gave me the opportunity to speak to artists from all over the world. Someday I might meet them all!
I hope that you find the poems heartfelt; irreverent, sad, bitter, sinister, atmospheric etc. and that, like me, you will enjoy these wonderful pictures which I think reflect their varying moods.
