One of Holland's most innovative painters of the seventeenth century, but long overshadowed by his more famous wife, painter Judith Leyster, Molenaer is a key link between Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Jan Steen. His early work consists of colourful genre paintings, portraits, and portrayals of the playful world of children, followed by a concentration on scenes of peasant life, all displaying an inventive symbolism and humour. Contents: Jan Miense Molenaer: Painter of the Dutch Golden Age; Molenaer in his Studio: Props, Models and Motifs; Jan Miense Molenaer in the Comic Mode; Catalogue of the Exhibition; Appendix: The 1668 Inventory of Molenaer's Possessions
