While sculpture dominated the British art scene in the eighties, photography and video have now assumed a leading role within a culture that is displaying a new creative energy and social awareness. London is the hub of a dynamic, innovative art movement that has become an international point of reference, particularly for the music business and, more recently, the film industry. The influence of ironic, irreverent movie images, pop music and video clips is visible in the work of all the artists featured in Strange Days. The cross-fertilization of the different media takes place against a backdrop that concentrates on the many social and private aspects of everyday life which is tough, bewildering, and virtually "untellable." The language used by the artists is therefore critical and irreverent at times but, above all, designed to radically change the concept and arrive at the most unorthodox interpretation of daily existence that is seen as disturbing.
