In March 1817 Gentleman Jack's female lover betrayed her by marrying a rich man. Stung and bereft, Anne returned to Shibden Hall as a single woman. Now she had to start again. She would always wear plain riding costumes in black from now on, the colour of male dignity and practicality. Self-pity and depression were allowed. Every morning her studies began at 5am, and she read extensively. Saving money to share life her richer friends was important. Above all she would be quiet and dignified to regain the respect of her aunt and uncle, who ran the lucrative Lister estates. Anne would never inherit the vast estates of all her childless relatives. But her future was not as expected.
