Marianne Schliwinski (born 1944) can look back on an artistic career spanning fifty years. Her creative output is extensive: starting with jewelry and its relationship to the body, since the early 1980s she has increasingly worked across many disciplines. Photography and installation form the focus of her work, yet the human body continues to remain ever-present as a point of departure and reference. She deals with sensitivities in a complex way, thematizes the relationship of interior and exterior worlds and juxtaposes jewellery with photography so as to reference the commonalities of what is superficially different. Political statements, the collecting of objects too and the use of unusual materials, like thus shards of glass, form the nucleus of her creative work. While she establishes unfamiliar associations and provides objects with new substance, Marianne Schliwinski succeeds in thinking outside the jewelry box and leads the observer to new and different dimensions.
