"Advances in Adolescent Mental Health" aims to provide updates on recent developmental advances in the study of adolescent mental health. Although aimed primarily at researchers in this field, the volumes in this series will be of wider interest to practitioners and others involved in adolescent care. In recent years there have been sharp increases in pregnancy, abortion and birth rates in developed countries, especially amongst adolescents. However, current intervention schemes have failed to meet successfully the dilemmas posed by such increases. One of the reasons for this failure has been uncertainty over where the best locus for primary intervention lies. The fourth volume in this series addresses this topical problem, attempting to cover the range of information currently available about adolescent contraception, pregnancy and parenting and points towards the needs for further research, programme development and policy implementation. Chapters focus on basic research, programme evaluation, model-building and testing, and policy development.
Beginning with a broad examination of the extent of the problem, it progresses to a chronological assessment of the course of adolescent pregnancy - contraceptive use, intervention programmes, pregnancy, parenting, child outcome and finally the implications for government policy are all covered.
