As the "Best Walks in the Lake District" and "Best Walks in the Peak District" (both also by Frank Duerden) and "Best Walks in North Wales" (by Richard Sale), 30 walks have been chosen which are the best the country has to offer, and which reflect the diversity of its landscape - its beaches and headlands, the Cheviot Hills, sandstone uplands such as Doddington Moor, the valleys of the Allens and the Derwent. The walks range in difficulty from short easy strolls in Berwick and on Holy Island (Lindisfarne), to routes that are moderately demanding, such as those along Hadrian's Wall. They end with the extremely strenuous Border Ridge walk that runs for 27.5 miles through the Cheviots and should only be attempted by fit and experienced hikers. Wherever possible the walks are circular, to avoid difficulties with transport. The book includes full details of accommodation, transport and points of interest (castles, harbours, cairns and Roman camps) that lie along the routes. The author's own maps and photographs fully illustrate the splendid informative and easy-to-use guide.
