In today's complex and ever-changing criminal environment, law enforcement agencies have become increasingly aware that their capabilities have been substantially surpassed by the number of criminal acts and rapid expansion of globalized crime. However, despite the growing impact of transnational organized crime (TOC), our understanding of the role of strategic intelligence in combating crime remains limited. The Role of Strategic Intelligence in Law Enforcement explores how strategic intelligence can support decision-makers in complex national policing organizations to prevent, detect, disrupt and investigate TOC. The authors examine four national law enforcement agencies in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, and argue for the development of empirically-grounded intelligence theory for law enforcement. In doing so they develop two conceptual frameworks to better integrate strategic TOC intelligence within law enforcement agencies and enhance the interface between strategic TOC intelligence, the policy process and strategic decision-making.
