The 16 interviews with contemporary Irish writers collected here originally appeared in the pages of the ""Irish Literary Supplement"" (ILS), between the years 1984 and 1994. Among the most notable printed in ILS, these interviews record the authors' perceptions of their own works, the process by which those writings came into being, and commentary on other writers' work. Through the dialogue, the interviews reveal the passion with which the authors regard literature and their own writing. James P. Myers introduces the collection with a critical essay exploring some of the aesthetics and conventions of the interview form itself. The book aims to serve as primary material for students and to preserve for Irish literature the discourse and methods of some of its preeminent writers. The book includes interviews with John McGahern, Jennifer Johnston, John Montague, Michael Longley, Paul Muldoon, William Trevor, Benedict Kiely, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Tom Paulin, Brendan Kennelly, Hugh Leonard, Medbh McGuckian, Eavan Boland, Derek Mahon and Eilean Ni Chuilleanain.
