Successful poultry production must be based on biological processes. As such a sound understanding of poultry behaviour and other related aspects of biology is an important prerequisite for designing and maintaining husbandry systems, and for preventing or overcoming management problems. In reviewing the poultry production industry, this volume presents an up-to-date coverage of the systems which are available or are now being developed. It considers the ways in which the biology and behaviour of the birds concerned, influence the performance of different systems and are in turn influenced by the environment. Reflecting current concern about factory farming and the interest in free-range poultry, the authors also assess the implications of different production systems for poultry welfare. Balanced and scientific throughout, the authors synthesize the results from an extremely active area of scientific research. Aspects of economics and legislation are covered from an international perspective.
The book is a useful addition to the literature in this field and is aimed at all students, research workers and professionals concerned with poultry production, as well as those with an interest in animal welfare.
