"Nelson Mathematics" is a scheme offering support for all of the UK Mathematics curricula. It allows primary teachers the opportunity to teach mathematics with confidence knowing that they will be supported by the Nelson policy of offering updates for all curricula. The scheme is structured but flexible, and fully supports the non-specialist teacher. It provides a choice of worksheets or workbooks at earlier levels, and features in-built assessment. There is an investigative approach throughout. "Nelson Mathematics" is presented in National Curriculum Levels to provide progression and continuity across Key Stages 1 and 2. Each level is designed to help teachers take each pupil, at whatever pace is appropriate, from one level to the next, hence, the prefix "towards" a level. The series is fully cross-referenced to the National Curriculum to help teachers with their planning and record-keeping. Following the review of the National Curriculum by Sir Ron Dearing in 1994, Nelson is offering a free National Curriculum update pack for existing users of "Nelson Mathematics". The teacher's resource file is the key to "Nelson Mathematics".
It provides a complete resource for planning, implementing and developing work. This resource for level 1 is arranged in sections corresponding to the broad areas of the Mathematics curriculum. Sections ae divided into a number of chapters which are further sub-divided into teaching units. A unit occupies one double-page spread, and always features the following in the same order: initial information - a shaded panel presents the teaching purpose, a materials list and key vocabulary; introduction - suggestions for practical starting points; development - for extending children's thinking, discussion and mathematical experiences; reinforcement and enrichment - a bank for further ideas and activities; using the children's materials - sets the context, and suggests how the material might be used; and assessment; focuses on key aspects of the unit to enable the teacher to assess the pupils' progress during and at the end of the unit (it can also be used as an entry point, to check on the appropriateness of the unit to the class or group).
