This book, which presents a new approach to the teaching of Fluid Mechanics, is based on two themes. The first is a consistent philosophy using the laws of conservation of mass, energy and momentum. This encourages students to think about basic concepts in a logical and unified way and leads to a less troublesome development of formal analytic methods. The second theme is that of modelling, which the book covers in a way which avoids too much formalism while still providing full derivations where appropriate. The unified approach to the conservation laws also allows an easy transition to the concepts of computational fluid dynamics which is introduced in the latter part of the book. The book provides many interesting applications such as wind turbines and propellers, drag and lift in sailing and the design of aerofoils. There are many illustrative examples together with tutorials and examination-type questions for which both hints and full solutions are provided. The book is based upon the author's lecture course at the University of Birmingham and has been extensively class tested.
This book should be of interest to introductory/intermediate undergraduates in mechanical, chemical and process engineering students.
