The changing political environment is generating a reduced demand for defence equipment in NATO and the world as a whole, yet Western military requirements continue to stress the need for technological sophistication in defence products. Under the pressure of these factors, substantial restructuring is underway in Western Europe's defence industries which traditionally have been organized on a national basis. Current industrial changes include a growing tend towards international collaborative projects, corporate strategic alliances, the establishment of multi-national companies with a substantial defence dimension, and diversification away from defence. Building on the trend towards the multi-faceted internationalization of defence industrial arrangements, this study considers the implications of industrial changes for governments and the European Community.
