When Rose Allatini is remembered today, it is as the author of Despised and Rejected, the only novel to be prosecuted and banned under the Defence of the Realm Act during the Great War as `liable to prejudice the recruiting, training and discipline of persons in his Majesty's forces'.
But Rose Allatini was also the author (under several disguises) of nearly forty other novels, over seven decades. This monograph sets out to dispel the myth that her other books were no more than romantic pot-boilers.
Her books include studies of Vienna at the start of the twentieth century; an exploration of the experience of mental illness; warnings of the rise of Nazi influence in Austria; descriptions of the refugee experience in London during the Second World War; and imaginative speculations about spritual healing.
Rose Allatini is a far more interesting and various writer than some current accounts of her writing would suggest.
