In 1991-1993 Polish coal producers generated very large losses. This was not because the cost of supply was excessively high in a European context. More important was the fact that the mining companies received very low prices for their output. This monograph looks at the restructuring of the industry in order to improve efficiency and shed remaining communist legacies, which offers considerable scope for reducing the cost levels. It also examines the markets for Polish coal, and the competitiveness of Polish coal.
