For a year, while the Master ruled over Earth, Martha Jones travelled the world telling people stories about the Doctor to inspire them and ultimately save them. Taken from the BBC book The Story of Martha, by Dan Abnett, ‘The Frozen Wastes’ is one of four short stories - adventures she had with the Doctor that we have never heard before. It is told to fellow workers in a Japanese labour camp. As a little girl, Martha always dreamed of being a doctor, and when she hears Pierre Bruyère say that he is going to conquer the North Pole by balloon, she recognises a fellow dreamer. As the Doctor and Martha listen to him outlining his plan to the Geographical Congress, the Doctor comments that it only has one major fault: it fails. History recounts that Bruyère set off in April 1890 and is never heard of again. ‘But, Doctor’, Martha replies, ‘It’s June 1890’... What has caused this temporal anomaly? What really happened to Bruyère and his crew? There’s only one way to find out - the Doctor and Martha must join his expedition.
