This work is a critical examination of the purposes, methodologies and perspectives of human geography. The author considers the relationship of human to physical geography, as well as to the other social sciences. He assesses the value of positivist and Marxist approaches and the relevance of applied geography. In the final section, Professor Johnston argues for human geography as a liberal exploration and appreciation of the meaning and complexities of human societies.
