In 1950, the first U. S. Military Assistance Advisory Group in Vietnam included a contingent of nine men from the U.S. Navy. From then and over the course of the next 25 years some 2,600,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel served in Vietnam, conducting combat operations of every kind and providing direct support to the other services and to civilian noncombatants. Edward J. Marolda skillfully blends superb research and writing with an excellent mix of photographs and combat art depicting Navy ships, air-craft, facilities, and especially people. As one reviewer wrote, "It documents a valiant, dedicated and professional performance by [the] Navy and Marine Corps warriors, and it is hard not mentally to contrast this performance with the bumbling and inept management of the war by the politicians."
