Collates the wartime dispatches, selected letters and personal reminiscences of Noah Brooks, the "Sacramento Daily Union" journalist who had direct access to the president, Abraham Lincoln, during the Civil War. The text provides a singular perspective on Lincoln's last years and an appraisal of the president's personality and politics. The information gathered is based on Brook's almost daily meetings with Lincoln during the last two and a half years of the war - meetings which allowed Brook to witness at firsthand Lincoln's actions and his evolving purpose of the war. The text also reveals much about Washington politics throughout the period and reflects public opinion in the north about the conduct of the war.
