Written in the first person by Steven Mosher, who has helped the Chi family find asylum in the US, this is an account of a young Chinese woman named Chi An and her shocking experience in the face of China's "one couple, one child" policy. The story begins in 1981, when China launched a fanatical campaign to control the population growth by limiting each couple to one child. A huge cadre of committed population-control workers was recruited to prevent the birth of illegal babies. Chi An, a young nurse, was one of the most relentless in rooting out pregnant women, subjecting them to forced abortions (often in the last three months) and sterilizations. A few years later, Chi An herself became the target of China's population police.
