This book is aimed at students of the built environment who as part of their course need to understand both the economic context within which firms operate and their financial performance. It demonstrates how economic policy and the dynamics of the capitalist system affect the profitability of individual firms. It also makes it clear that profitability is not simply a function of the macroeconomy: it shows that the structure of the construction industry and the behaviour of firms within it do have a significant effect on performance. It is practically and empirically based with Web-based resources and downloadable IT files for student use in spreadsheets. At the end of each chapter there is a series of IT exercises.
