The series, "A Sense of History", uses a combination of narrative and unusual sources to tell good stories well. It invites teachers and pupils to explore the past together and tap into the lives and feelings of the men and women of the time. It should encourage pupils to make their own judgements based on the evidence they have and give them confidence to debate their own findings, and should provide teachers with a wealth of historical source material for discussion and further study. The structure of "A Sense of History" relates directly to the National Curriculum in England and Wales, but can also be used as part of the new history curriculum in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The series aims to give children continuation throughout their school years, providing material for infants at Key Stage 1, for juniors at Key Stage 2 and for lower secondary pupils at Key Stage 3. Designed for Core Study Unit 3, at Key Stage 2, "Your Victorian Locality" looks at Victorian Britain - in particular at the ways in which industrialization affected the lives of men, women and children at all levels of society in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
It shows children how to search for evidence of change in their own local buildings, streets and families, and includes domestic, economic, religious and social aspects of change.
