This teacher's resource pack accompanies the foundation pupil's book on the American West in a series written by teachers and SHP examiners, that is designed to meet the requirements of the revised GCSE syllabuses. Each book in the series provides a source-based active learning approach, and some of the units are approached through asking key questions, or focusing on important issues or controversies. At the end of each unit in the pupil's book, there is an exam practise section that provides questions which cover the assessment objectives outlined in the GCSE syllabus. There are also summary boxes to aid revision. The pupil's book, aimed at lower attainers, analyzes how the American West was settled and developed between 1840 and 1895. Coverage includes the way of life of the Plains Indians, the reasons why people went West, the role of the railways, the development of farming and ranches, the conflict between ranchers and homesteaders, the conflict between white Americans and Plains Indians, and the policies of the American government. There is also a core edition of the pupil's book, which is aimed at higher attainers and has a more complex text.
The teacher's resource pack contains mark schemes for selected questions in the pupil's book, tips and advice on GCSE exams, and activities to help lower achievers. There are also examiners' comments on student responses, to help pupils understand what is expected of them in the exam and to give them confidence when answering questions. The pupil's book and the teacher's pack can also be bought together in an evaluation pack.
