Featuring the work of Brooklyn-based artist Jose Parla and Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou, Imagining New Worlds considers the legacy and influence of Wifredo Lam, a preeminent artist of Latin American descent and one of the Surrealist movement's most influential figures. Representing a new generation engaged in a global discourse on art and culture, identity and alterity, Jose Parla and Fahamu Pecou will consider Lam's legacy through their own personal and often poetic reflections on Lam's involvement with Surrealism and poetry, his fusion of African-inspired imagery with that of the natural world and the influence of the Santeria religion of the Caribbean and the Negritude movement on Lam's art. The dual exhibitions, curated by High Museum curator Michael Rooks, are presented concurrently with a retrospective of the work of Wifredo Lam and are the first major museum presentations of work by Parla and Pecou.
