In conjunction with Save the Children this series investigates the needs of children in both developed and developing countries. In 1987, the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, the United Nations set up a list of standards which all homes should reach. Looking at the problems of homelessness, this book takes the view that a home should provide health and happiness as well as physical shelter. It takes a global look at the problem and at some of the attempts to relieve it. Many of the different reasons why people find themselves in need of shelter, from violence in the home to political intimidation and natural disasters, are discussed. The author examines the problem of providing homes for refugees, of balancing the need for children to retain their cultural identity with that of integration into their new community. Included are case histories of a homeless family in New York, one of the world's richest cities, and of life on the streets of Calcutta from the viewpoint of a homeless child. The text is accompanied by many photographs and illustrations, notes for teachers, a glossary and index.
