This book from the "People of the World" series sets out to explain the history of the Aborigines. Originating in south-east Asia, the Aborigines migrated across land which is now submerged. They evolved a way of life suited to their barren country, living by gathering food and hunting. Their homelands were near to water, but when the Europeans arrived in the 19th century, they were driven into Australia's arid interior. Tribal wars and disease decimated the population, and by the 1950s their numbers had greatly diminished, although they are now increasing. The history and rich mythological traditons are described together with the aims and aspirations of present-day Aborigines.
