This activity-based series encourages the reader to explore simple design and technology concepts and to try them out in practical projects. Each book explains the basic principles of the subject, looking at examples of design found in nature and working through to advanced modern technology. In this volume, textiles are examined in various forms, from the growing of flax to make linen to the latest synthetic fibres like thinsulate. The reader is guided through a brief history of the textile industry. Starting with natural fibres like cotton, linen and silk, the author explains where these fabrics come from - cotton plant, flax plant and silkworm - and moves on to the technology of synthetic fibres like nylon and rayon. There are sections on dyeing fabrics, use of colour and the many different methods of printing patterns on to fabric.
