The basic theme of Professor Mullen's latest book is that group composition influences some of the basic perceptual and cognitive processes of the members of the group, that these processes are interesting in their own right and that they have interesting implications for the social behaviours of people in a group. The book details the results of a series of meta-analytic integrations of previous research, which illuminate the interface between social cognition phenomena and group processes phenomena. Its focus is on the phenomenology of "being in a group" in the sense that the overview of the literature gives a very clear picture of what it feels like to be in a group, and generally how being in a group influences us. "The Phenomenology of Being in a Group" reveals a great deal about social cognition phenomena, about group processes phenomena, and about how these two trends in social psychology illuminate one another.
