C’est bon. I enjoyed the first half the most, up through Voltaire and Emilie du Châtelet. (I’d say up through the Sades, but none of that story was new, and I could fill in things the book missed.) The last half felt like it rushed to meet deadlines and fell short of making a cohesive whole, but examining the changing culture and its philosophies vis-à-vis its relationships is an intriguing approach.
