On the morning of April 22nd, 2011 American businessman, philanthropist and Red Cross volunteer Richard Field helped the Hungarian Red Cross evacuate 267 Roma women and children threatened by paramilitaries from the Hungarian town of Gyongyospata. The Good Friday evacuation shamed the Hungarian government into banning "uniformed criminals" from policing or intimidating minority communities. Angered by foreign coverage of the evacuation and eager to deflect criticism from itself, the Hungarian government accused Richard Field of "staging a mock evacuation" in order to "embarrass the government" and "tarnish Hungary's image abroad." Love Letters to a Neo-Nazi is Field's story told through letters to public officials and articles he wrote for English language weekly The Budapest Times.
