Cosme (Cosimo) Tura was among the most striking and inventive painters of the Italian Renaissance. This study discusses Tura's place in quattrocento painting, and examines his critical fortunes over the centuries. Transcriptions of all the documents that relate to Tura's varied and active career as an artist, especially those that record his work as court painter for the Estensi are included, and a catalogue raisonne provides detailed information on Tura's known works. There is commentary and bibliography on other attributions, and illustrations of all of Tura's works.
