Though Asia is home to 60 per cent of the world's population, the region spanning from Pakistan to Japan and Indonesia has not been in the forefront of the global cultural agenda for the past 500 years. Focusing on the "Korean Wave", which has been able to make waves internationally in recent years with its drama, films and pop music, this book explores how Asian pop music could set the global cultural agenda in the twenty-first century.
Written by a Korean, a Sri Lankan and an Indian Evolving Asian Cultural Gateways was completed just when Psy's ""Gangnam Style"" video was beginning to make waves around the world. Beginning with a discussion about "soft power" from an Asian perspective, we explore various aspects of the "Korean Wave" over four chapters. In the next chapter we take a critical view of the "Korean Wave" particularly K-pop music by questioning why traditional Korean cultural elements are not fused into this modern music.
In the next chapter we take a special look at the "Bhangra Wave" in particular from India. In the final two chapters we discuss the barriers to creating "cross-over'" Asian pop music genres and why Asians have been unable to create its own MTV style music channel. Is it a lack of creativity or a question of decolonising our minds? Read to find out.
