This guide combines a detailed tour of a superbly sited Roman Fort astride Hadrian's Wall in Cumbria and a country walk from the nearby market town of Brampton. The narrator is Tony Wilmott, Director of Excavations at Birdoswald, who gives a contemporary vision both of this historic site and the broader region. The tour of Birdoswald can be accomplished even if the visitor centre is closed, though the experience is enhanced by a precursory view of the exhibition. The two walks reveal in microcosm the range of landscape characteristics that compose the Roman frontier zone, and later Middle Marches of the Border Reivers. The tour of Birdoswald Roman Fort is one mile long and takes a leisurely paced one and a quarter hours; the Brampton and Lanercost walk is four and a half miles long and will take an estimated three hours.
