This book is not another attempt to arouse ecological awareness. It assumes that readers are already environmentally aware but may be uncomfortable with the accepted approaches to thinking about and tackling enrionmental problems. It has three prinicipal aims; firstly to chart how and why environmental issues have achieved their present prominence; secondly to help readers connect their ecological concerns to their other political and social convictions, and thirdly to use the chequered history of environmentalism as a springboard to instigate alternative ways of approaching envionmental problems in the future. The author, a well-known historian of the Pacific, offers a critique of the environmental movement and intertwines narrative and analysis to suggest that environmental problems create opportunities to articulate new social and political structures.
