At a time when the whippet is increasing in popularity at home and overseas, this book traces the story of the breed in England from a point several centuries before its recognition by the Kennel Club in 1890, through the founding of the Whippet Club, the other breed clubs and the Whippet Coursing Club, and up to the present day. The authors describe what is known about the origins of the whippet breed clubs and the pure-bred whippet in relation to the breed standard. They offer a beginner's guide to the sometimes puzzling world of dog shows and showing, and give a full account of what has happened in the show ring in the last 20 years. This book describes coursing with whippets, and there are separate chapters on the hunting whippet and the racing whippet. There are also chapters on breeding and rearing. Full appendices give information on leading sires (1962-89), and an index of champions for the same period. Information on breed clubs, coursing clubs and the Whippet Club Racing Association are also included. There is a bibliography and iconography, and 170 photographs and drawings complement the text.
