This book on fly fishing is based on the combined research and experience of perhaps three of the most successful trout fishermen in the British Isles. The authors begin by explaining how their own approach and ideas have evolved in response to their experience over the years. A small but very comprehensive tackle selection is recommended, and attention is then turned towards the main focus of the book - the quest for trout. An underatanding of the trout's environment and behaviour is essential to success and both are described in detail, emphasising, for example, the differences between browns and rainbows, residents and stock-fish. In translating these observations into tactics some completely new techniques are revealed. Fly tying is also covered in a refreshingly different light, which concentrates on creating artificials to attract fish. Emphasis is placed firmly on understanding the reasoning behind fly patterns, explaining variations in the same fly to suit different water conditions. Although the book concentrates on fishing for pleasure, additional advice is given for competitions, followed by full descriptions of how to fish the four major English reservoirs.
A number of personal anecdotes give further insight into the pleasures and techniques of fly fishing.
