World War I holds a very special place in the history of the Third French Republic. All of the bitter social and political divisions which had plagued the early years of the Third Republic were forgotten in August 1914 when the nation went to war. Despite occupation and numerous hardships, the morale of the French people, both military and civilian, remained firm. This study aims to identify the reasons why the French people held out against occupying forces. Using information and individual case studies gathered from historical archives in south-east France, the author attempts to determine the nature and extent of the hardships and sacrifices made by the civilian population during the war.
