Fluctuations in the value of property and changes in the availability of loans made against the collateral of houses can have major macroeconomic effects. This study explores the nature of these links. The author uses the tools of economic theory to develop a framework within which the complex interactions between housing markets, financial markets and government policy can be analyzed.
